From Data to Action to Avert, Minimise and Address Disaster Displacement
Side-event at COP29
16 November 2024
12.00-13.30 AZT
Saleemul Huq Action Research Exchange (SHARE) Hub
Displacement is one of the most significant manifestations of loss and damage associated with the impacts of climate change and disasters. Every year, storms, cyclones and floods trigger millions of displacements across the world and disproportionately affect the most vulnerable territories and communities. Progress has been made in recent years to provide more reliable and accessible data on the impacts of climate change on displacement, to inform evidence-based policies and interventions. However, persistent data gaps, as well as lack of government capacities and resources to monitor and address displacement, impede the design and implementation of solutions to avert, minimize and address displacement in climate-affected contexts. The side event will demonstrate the importance of investing in data collection and analytical efforts to support state commitment, leadership and capacity to respond to the needs of displaced populations or at risk of being displaced.
