Food insecurity among internally displaced people in Somalia: Trends analysis over time (2017–2024)

Internally displaced people (IDPs) experience disproportionately high levels of acute food insecurity.

This joint policy brief by IDMC and FAO reveals that IDPs in Somalia face significantly higher rates of acute food insecurity than the rest of the population, with 34% of IDPs affected compared to just 15% of non-IDPs. Drawing on unique, displacement-disaggregated IPC data collected since 2017, the brief highlights regional disparities and trends over time, underscoring the need for targeted responses. It calls for tailored, long-term solutions through climate-resilient agrifood systems and a Humanitarian–Development–Peace Nexus approach to reduce aid dependency and build resilience among Somalia’s most vulnerable communities.
